After returning to the US recently, I dove headfirst into the world of programming, but before that my journey was anything but boring. Graduating with a B.S. in Kinesiology I thought my future involved wearing a stethoscope and healing sick people. Between working as an Emergency Medical Technician in Orange County and Seattle and countless hours of volunteering at hospitals, I gained incredible life and communication skills. As it came time to submit my medical school applications I could no longer quiet that little voice in my head that was telling me I was meant to go down a different path.
That's when I stepped into the world of Tech and started the role that would forever change my life. I had the incredible fortune of being hired at Zillow Group, a company that saw my potential and utilized my technical strengths.
Months into this new career path I was being put on projects that opened the doors to a new realm, one that was completely foreign to me: programming. Once that light was turned on, I knew I couldn’t turn it off.
After a year at Zillow, my wild and supportive wife and I decided it was time to follow our dream to experience other cultures. So, I quit, packed up our apartment, and put our life in a storage unit. Good-Bye United States! The next six months we traveled through Southeast Asia and South America. From trekking through the Himalayas in Nepal, to volunteering with rescued elephants and dogs in Thailand, to traversing Patagonia, to eating our hearts out in every place we went - it was the adventure of a lifetime.
Fast forward to today – I’m almost through General Assembly’s Immersive Software Development Course. The past three months I’ve given my absolute all to quench my thirst for knowledge and understanding of all the languages and logic. I look forward to being able to apply to real life projects!
